Auricular Acupuncture and Pregnancy: Myths and Facts

One of the first questions I get from a pregnant client is "is the technique safe?", it doesn't matter if we're talking about Auricular Acupuncture, Reflexology or any other therapy. And that is a fair enough question. When a person falls pregnant, along comes a list of official and unofficial restrictions long enough to make anyone lose sleep.





With a limited amount of options when it comes to the relief of symptoms during pregnancy, holistic treatments have been known for their non-invasive nature, helping with a wide range of concerns, from pain management to anxiety.

Auricular Acupuncture or Ear Acupuncture is a microsystem of acupuncture. It works by triggering an effect in areas of the brain, specific to the corresponding zone on the ear creating change in the targeted anatomical area.


Of course that erring on the side of caution is advisable. When in doubt, check with your medical consultant, and be sure to choose an experienced and specialised therapist who can clarify all your questions.



Top 3 Myths and Facts


1- Auricular Acupuncture isn't safe up until the 12th week of gestation.


Myth. However, as the body undergoes a great amount of changes during the first trimester many professionals choose not to see clients until the 13th week of gestation, giving the body a chance to adapt naturally. A specialised therapist can reassure you and also offer options that help you navigate this period.


2- Auricular Acupuncture can be harmful during pregnancy.


Myth. There is no studies correlating Auricular acupuncture with any harmful or fatal result neither for the pregnant or the baby. Nonetheless, is paramount a qualified professional is consulted, as there are specific procedures one must be aware of to ensure a safe practise.


3- Auricular Acupuncture can help with labour.


Fact. Auricular Acupuncture can help with preparing for birthing stimulating the body to its readiness, and also during labour thanks to its "portability" and the use of semi-permanent needles and spheres which can be continuously activated by the client.
